Yanomami Indigenous Territory sees 75.7% drop in malnutrition deaths
Malnutrition deaths in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory fell by 75.7% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2023, when a public health emergency was declared. Total deaths from all causes also saw a 29.5% decrease, dropping from 224 in early 2023 to 158 in the first half of 2026.
Health indicators show a 50.6% reduction in malaria cases, with no deaths from the disease recorded in the first half of 2026. This improvement is attributed to increased testing, active case searching, and the use of tafenoquine for Plasmodium vivax. Additionally, acute respiratory infection deaths decreased by 40.8%.
Vaccination efforts have expanded, with doses administered increasing by 79.8% compared to 2023. The proportion of infants under one year old with a complete vaccination schedule rose from 28% to 57.6%. Nutritional monitoring has reached 84% of children, supported by an increase in healthcare professionals from 690 in 2023 to over 2,100 in 2025.
