Yanomami people report illegal mining invasions in Brazil

The Urihi Yanomami Association has reported increased threats and invasions by illegal miners within the Yanomami Indigenous Territory. According to reports, miners have begun negotiating the division of land for illegal gold and cassiterite extraction, specifically targeting areas such as Xitei and Surucucu.

Indigenous leaders state that these activities intensified following the first round of the presidential election. Reports indicate that miners have contacted community members, offering payments to youths to clear landing strips and maintain logistics for mining operations. Aerial surveillance by planes has also been noted in the region.

The association has submitted a formal report to the Federal Police, the Federal Public Ministry, Funai, and Ibama to request urgent intervention.
