Yantai launches citywide “Healthy Weight Management Year” program
Yantai municipal authorities have begun a public health campaign called “Healthy Weight Management Year.” The initiative, organized by the Yantai Municipal Health Commission, the Yantai Center for Disease Control and the local CDC centers, offers free physical examinations, personalized exercise plans from professional teams, and ongoing guidance for residents whose body‑mass index is 24 kg/m² or higher (or waist circumference ≥90 cm for men, ≥85 cm for women). Participants must be free of serious cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, or other conditions that limit exercise. The program emphasizes safe, scientific, and effective weight loss through regular activity, balanced nutrition, group workouts and health‑education sessions, avoiding extreme dieting or unsupervised exercise.
The launch reflects a broader shift in weight‑management practice over the past decade, moving away from one‑size‑fits‑all diets toward personalized, sustainable lifestyle changes. Health professionals now consider genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, medications and underlying medical conditions when advising patients, treating excess weight as a complex medical issue rather than a simple matter of willpower. This more holistic approach underpins Yantai’s campaign, which aims to improve cardiovascular fitness, maintain muscle mass, support mental well‑being and reduce chronic‑disease risk among the city’s overweight population.
