Yaoundé launches preparatory phase for TransYaoundé BRT project

The TransYaoundé Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has officially entered a complementary preparatory phase. The initiative, launched by Yaoundé Mayor Luc Messi Atangana, aims to establish a 22-kilometer corridor connecting Olembé in the north to Ahala II in the south.

The planned infrastructure includes 28 stations and a fleet of 52 articulated electric buses. Once operational, the system is expected to transport 43,000 passengers daily, with the capacity to reach 110,000 passengers in the long term. The project seeks to increase commercial speeds from the current 20 km/h to 50 km/h, significantly reducing travel times through the capital's congested central points.

Despite the project being discussed since 2015, the current timeline sets the completion of detailed preliminary studies for 2027, infrastructure works for 2029, and full commercial service for 2031. The project is co-financed by the European Union and the Agence française de développement.
