Yaoundé ministers hold crisis meeting over waste management

In Yaoundé, Cameroon, government ministers held an interministerial crisis meeting on August 28, 2026, to address the city's growing waste management crisis. The meeting, chaired by Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji, included the Minister of Habitat and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès, and the Minister of Decentralization, Georges Elanga Obam, alongside local officials and waste collection companies HYSACAM and THICLOP.

The session resulted in the announcement of strict measures, including weekly inspections by sub-prefects and field visits to specific intersections. However, previous regulatory efforts and ministerial decrees aimed at managing waste have reportedly failed to produce lasting results on the ground, with illegal dumping sites continuing to proliferate.
