Maurice Kamto resigns as president of Cameroon's MRC party
Maurice Kamto, the founder and longtime leader of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC), announced his resignation from the party presidency on September 8, 2026. Kamto stated his decision was made in the “superior interest” of the party, its members, and the “People of Change.”
Following Kamto's announcement, first vice-president Mamadou Mota also resigned from his post. Mota cited “constant harassment” by the Cameroonian administration as the reason for his departure, noting that stepping down would prevent the government from using him as a focal point for pressure, thereby allowing the party to continue its political objectives.
The resignations occur amidst a period of intense administrative tension. The Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, had previously refused to recognize a December 2025 convention that re-elected Kamto as president, creating uncertainty regarding the party's legal leadership. Following these departures, Tiriane Noah has taken over the leadership of the MRC.
