Yara International launches major European carbon capture project

Yara International has launched Europe’s largest industrial carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at its ammonia and fertilizer plant in Sluiskil, Netherlands. The facility is designed to capture 800,000 tons of CO2 annually from the production process. Once captured, the CO2 is liquefied and transported by ship to Norway, where it will be stored approximately 2,600 meters beneath the seabed by the Northern Lights joint venture.

The project aims to capture roughly 12 million tons of CO2 over the next 15 years. While the captured amount represents about 0.5% of total annual Dutch greenhouse gas emissions, it serves as a significant step toward large-scale industrial decarbonization.

In a related development, Azane Fuel Solutions has signed an ammonia supply agreement with Yara Norge. This deal secures ammonia for Azane’s marine fuel business, with products being supplied through Yara’s existing logistics network to customers including Equinor. Yara’s venture arm previously held a 14.5% stake in Azane.
