Yare II prison faces sanitary crisis and inhumane conditions
The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) has reported a severe sanitary crisis and inhumane conditions at the Yare II detention center in Venezuela. The report follows the transfer of political prisoners from El Rodeo I to Yare II in early September.
According to testimonies from family members, detainees are being forced to consume turbid, non-potable water. Some prisoners have reportedly resorted to using improvised methods, such as makeup remover or water purification tablets, to make the water safe to drink.
The facility is also facing a health crisis, including an outbreak of scabies exacerbated by overcrowding and poor hygiene. Families have further alleged medical negligence, noting that physical injuries and pre-existing conditions, such as urinary tract infections, are not receiving specialized medical attention. Clippve emphasized that the Venezuelan state holds direct responsibility for the physical integrity of those in its custody.
