Yaren Mercan's Fatal Kayseri Traffic Accident Sent to Forensic Board

A traffic collision on 19 March in Talas district, Kayseri, Turkey, killed 22‑year‑old Erciyes University medical student Yaren Mercan. The crash involved a motorcycle ridden by Mercan and a car driven by Kadir Efe, whose blood‑alcohol level was measured at 1.05 ‰. Efe was detained, later placed in pre‑trial custody, and charged with “conscious negligence causing death.”

During the second hearing of the case at the 25th Criminal Court of First Instance, the judge ordered the file to be referred to the General Forensic Board for further expert review, citing discrepancies in the medical reports. The hearing was adjourned pending completion of the required examinations. Mercan’s funeral was held on 21 March, with her casket draped in a doctor’s coat. The driver said, “It was an accident. I had no intention, and I have also lost relatives in traffic crashes.”
