Yargıtay upholds divorce after wife missed mother-in-law's funeral

The Turkish Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) has upheld a divorce ruling involving a 20-year marriage in Ankara. The decision follows a lawsuit filed by a businessman, N. Y., against his wife, S. Y.

The plaintiff cited his wife's failure to attend social obligations, such as weddings, and specifically noted her absence from his mother's funeral in 2024 as the final breaking point. While the wife claimed her distance was due to ongoing tension with her mother-in-law, the Ankara Family Court found her fully at fault for the breakdown of the marriage. The court determined that the husband could not be proven to have any attributable fault in the dissolution of the marriage.
