Yasemin Kılınç promotes traditional Turkish filography art

Yasemin Kılınç, a handicrafts instructor based in Manisa, has spent 15 years teaching the traditional art of filography. A graduate of Selçuk University, Kılınç teaches at various community education centers, instructing students ranging from age 20 to over 60. She noted a recent increase in interest among younger generations, observing that the practice often serves as a form of therapy.

Filography is a decorative art involving the use of wire and nails on wood, with historical roots tracing back to Ottoman palaces. The process involves placing designs on 12mm gourd plywood, securing nails, and weaving wires using various techniques to create patterns such as calligraphy, geometric shapes, and flags.

Kılınç recently participated in the Living Heritage Festival in Kütahya at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Her primary objective is to promote Turkish filography on an international scale and introduce the art form to the world.
