Yasmina el Masri appeals defamation conviction against Ashraf Zaki
The Cairo Economic Court of Appeal has begun hearing the appeal of actress Yasmina el Masri regarding her conviction for defamation, insulting, and libel against Ashraf Zaki, the head of the Egyptian Acting Professions Syndicate.
El Masri was previously sentenced to one month in prison, a fine of 15,000 Egyptian pounds, and 10,000 Egyptian pounds in temporary civil compensation. The charges stem from posts made on her personal Facebook account that allegedly insulted Zaki and his family.
During the appeal hearing, the lawyer representing Zaki requested the upholding of the original verdict, citing investigations and technical reports from information technology authorities that confirmed the electronic insults. The court has scheduled a session for June 27 to issue its ruling.
