Yasuo Takamatsu dives in Japan to honor wife lost to 2011 tsunami

Yasuo Takamatsu has maintained a ritual for over 13 years, diving into the ocean near Onagawa in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture twice a month. This routine serves as a way for him to feel close to his wife, Yuko, who was lost during the 2011 tsunami.

The tsunami, triggered by a massive 9.0 to 9.1 magnitude undersea earthquake, swept inland nearly 10 kilometers. On the morning of the disaster, Yasuo had dropped Yuko off at her workplace. After she and her colleagues sought refuge on a bank rooftop, she sent a final text message asking if he was safe and expressing a desire to return home. While Yasuo initially believed she was safe, he discovered the next day that she had been swept away by the waves.
