Ghana football undergoes reforms following Black Stars coaching changes

Ghanaian football is undergoing significant restructuring following a period of poor performance by the national men’s team, the Black Stars. Following consecutive defeats in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia, Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has departed the team by mutual consent.

To address the crisis, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have formed a five-member Technical Search Committee, chaired by Fred Pappoe, to find a new head coach. The new coach will be required to reside in Ghana to monitor the domestic league. Additionally, Asamoah Gyan has been appointed as the liaison for player and club relations to improve internal cohesion.

Broader reforms include restructuring youth development pathways (U15, U17, and U20) and establishing a Public Interest Committee to oversee implementation. Amidst these changes, legal experts note that the GFA cannot be dissolved by government decree, as dissolution requires a three-quarters majority vote from its own Congress. Meanwhile, former National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has highlighted the need for more support in managing the nation's sporting facilities.
