Ydanis Rodríguez discusses political future and immigrant roots
Ydanis Rodríguez, the former Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), recently discussed his personal history and political future in the United States during a podcast appearance.
Rodríguez reflected on his journey as an immigrant, citing the influence of his family and community organizations like Orientación and Nuevo Surco in helping the Dominican community preserve its identity in New York. He highlighted his early activism at City College and his involvement in movements for educational access, which contributed to the establishment of the Dominican Studies Institute at the City University of New York (CUNY).
Having served as a council member and a teacher before becoming DOT Commissioner on January 1, 2022, Rodríguez noted that his transition from activism to public office was driven by a desire to create opportunities for the working class. During his tenure at the DOT, he managed an agency with approximately 6,000 employees and an annual budget of $1.5 billion.
