Yehia Amin sentenced to 90 days for antisemitic assault in Times Square

Yehia Amin has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for an antisemitic assault that occurred in Times Square on October 18, 2023. Amin pleaded guilty to third-degree assault as a hate crime following a plea agreement with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

During the incident, prosecutors stated that Amin stalked a group of individuals wearing kippahs, including a 23-year-old Israeli tourist, while shouting antisemitic threats. The assault concluded when Amin punched the Israeli tourist in the back of the head as the group attempted to flee.

During the sentencing hearing, Criminal Court Judge Althea Drysdale confronted Amin regarding his demeanor after he was observed smiling and flashing what observers described as a “victory sign.” Amin, who arrived late to the proceedings with his mother, told the judge through an Arabic interpreter that he was smiling because he “wanted to look good for the photographs.”
