Yehuda Widawski, oldest Holocaust survivor in Israel, dies at 107

Yehuda Aharon Widawski, recognized as one of the oldest Holocaust survivors in Israel, has passed away at the age of 107. Born in Turek, Poland, in 1919, Widawski survived the Lodz Ghetto and was later deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. While he and his brother Yehoshua survived the selection process and were sent to the Friedland labor camp, most of his immediate family members were murdered by the Nazi regime.

Following the war, Widawski immigrated to Israel in 1950. He dedicated much of his later life to preserving the memory of the Jewish communities destroyed during the Holocaust. Starting in 1978, he actively worked to locate, identify, and restore Jewish graves and cemeteries in Poland. According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, his efforts contributed to the identification and marking of more than 3,000 graves.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed condolences to Widawski’s family, describing his life as an “extraordinary testimony to the triumph of life, memory, and renewal.”
