Yeşilçam era stars: How legendary Turkish actors were discovered

The history of Turkish cinema, particularly the Yeşilçam era, features many stars who were discovered through talent competitions or direct scouting rather than modern talent agencies.

Ahmet Mekin entered the industry in the 1950s after being introduced to director Ömer Lütfi Akad by Kenan Pars. Akad immediately cast him in a leading role. Mekin later transitioned from leading man roles to character acting in the 1970s.

Hülya Koçyiğit achieved international success early in her career. While a student at the Ankara State Conservatory, she was cast by director Metin Erksan for the film ‘Susuz Yaz’. Erksan also entered her into a cinema artist competition to bolster her career prospects.
