Edo State House of Assembly elects Yekini Idiaye as new Speaker

Blessing Agbebaku has resigned as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following an impeachment move by lawmakers. Reports indicate that approximately 17 of the 24 lawmakers had signed an impeachment notice prior to his departure.

Yekini Idiaye, a third-term lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, has been elected as the new Speaker. Idiaye attributed the leadership change to allegations of corruption and poor governance under Agbebaku, specifically citing issues such as prolonged legislative adjournments and the alleged inflation of costs for procuring vehicles.

Following the election, the House moved to suspend Agbebaku pending investigations into these allegations. The new Speaker stated that the change is intended to support the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Governor Okpebholo has urged the new legislative leadership to prioritize unity, transparency, and teamwork, advising lawmakers to resolve internal disputes through dialogue rather than social media.
