Yellowknife and GNWT decline 2035 Canada Winter Games bid

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the City of Yellowknife have jointly decided not to pursue a bid to host the 2035 Canada Winter Games. The decision follows a feasibility assessment that identified potential economic, cultural, and sporting benefits but also highlighted substantial financial, operational, and infrastructure requirements.

Municipal and Community Affairs Minister Vince McKay stated that the required investment and infrastructure would make it difficult to deliver the games responsibly and sustainably at this time. Yellowknife Mayor Ben Hendriksen echoed this sentiment, noting that the city must prioritize its resources and focus its efforts elsewhere.

The Canada Winter Games Council expressed disappointment regarding the decision but confirmed it will not impact the timeline for the 2035 games. The council intends to work with federal, provincial, and territorial governments to identify a new host jurisdiction.
