Yellowknives Dene First Nation hosts second annual Xat’ǫ̀ Gathering
The second annual Xat’ǫ̀ Gathering took place at the Wıìlıìdeh Site from August 20 to 23, bringing together more than 1,000 participants for a celebration of culture, community, and connection. Organized by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation (YKDFN), the event featured a $150,000 men’s hand games tournament involving 72 teams and 648 players from British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories.
Beyond the competition, the gathering included drumming, music, and various cultural activities. The event aimed to revive traditions that date back before the 1900s, serving as a space for intergenerational unity and healing. Facilities at the site included a cultural tent focused on YKDFN history, a wellness tent, and a ‘Fish for Sale’ traveling history exhibit from the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre.
Organizers noted that the gathering provides a vital opportunity for people from different northern regions to reconnect. The event also serves to honor the resilience of those impacted by the residential school system.
