Houthis expand weapons manufacturing using Chinese dual-use components
An investigation by Bloomberg reveals that the Houthi militia is expanding its domestic capacity to manufacture and assemble weapons in Yemen. The group is increasingly utilizing civilian and dual-use components sourced from international trading networks, specifically from China, to reduce its reliance on fully assembled weapon imports.
Investigators tracked dozens of containers linked to 41 shipping documents from Chinese suppliers. In 25 instances, the name of the Yemeni importer was changed while shipments were in transit, a tactic Yemeni authorities believe is used to conceal the ultimate beneficiary.
A container destined for Hodeidah but intercepted in Aden contained industrial machinery, chemicals, and heat-resistant materials used in missile production. Other intercepted shipments included CNC machine tools, guidance systems, and two-cylinder motors suitable for drones. While these items have legitimate civilian uses, they are being repurposed for military manufacturing. The investigation found no evidence that the Chinese companies involved were aware of the intended military applications.
