Yemen: Civilian casualties reported following school missile strike

Reports indicate ongoing civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure in Yemen. On September 23, 2026, a missile attack targeted the Amr ibn al-Aas secondary school in the Lahj governorate, resulting in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to four others. The Ministry of Human Rights documented significant damage to classrooms, laboratories, and offices within the school, noting that the facility is located in a densely populated residential area far from active military frontlines.

The attack follows a broader pattern of disruption to the Yemeni education sector. According to UNICEF, recent escalations have led to the closure or suspension of studies in 243 schools, affecting more than 137,000 students. Additionally, local authorities in Taiz reported that 29 schools have ceased operations due to proximity to combat zones.

Historical records from September 26 in previous years also highlight significant civilian impact, including airstrikes in Marib, Sana'a, Saada, and Al Bayda, which resulted in numerous deaths and the destruction of residential homes, telecommunications towers, and agricultural lands.
