Yemen conflict escalation prompts UN warnings over civilian casualties
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed alarm over escalating hostilities in Yemen, marking the most severe surge in fighting since the unofficial 2022 truce. Türk urged all parties to de-escalate immediately to prevent the country from returning to full-scale conflict.
Reports indicate significant civilian casualties resulting from recent attacks. Since August 6, at least 17 civilian casualties have been reported in government-controlled areas due to Ansar Allah attacks. Additionally, two casualties were reported in Ansar Allah-controlled areas in late July. Specific incidents include a missile strike on the Jaw al-Naseem internally displaced persons camp in Ma’rib and attacks on Al-Mokha port in the Ta’izz Governorate, which killed three workers and injured four others.
Maritime security remains a concern, with an Ansar Allah attack on a cargo ship in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on August 11 reportedly killing four crew members—three Pakistanis and one Indonesian. Türk emphasized the necessity for all parties to abide by international humanitarian law and refrain from targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure, such as fuel storage and medical facilities, noting that at least 18 million Yemenis are currently facing food insecurity.
