Yemen and Turkey discuss Houthi escalation and maritime security

Yemeni Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Istanbul to discuss bilateral relations and the escalating conflict in Yemen. During the meeting, al-Zouba delivered a written message from President Rashad al-Alimi to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding regional developments and the coordination of positions.

The discussions focused on the Houthi militia's attacks on civilians, state institutions, and vital infrastructure in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, including airports and oil facilities. Both officials emphasized the need to protect international navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait. Fidan reaffirmed Turkey's support for Yemen's national unity and territorial integrity, while calling for the restoration of security in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab.

Al-Zouba highlighted the importance of the ‘Yemen Dawn Operation’, launched by President al-Alimi on October 5, 2026, aimed at reclaiming state sovereignty and preventing arms flows to the Houthis. The two sides also explored expanding cooperation in education, health, energy, and investment, as well as supporting the Yemeni community in Turkey.
