Yemen Human Rights Minister discusses rights situation with Dutch and U.S. officials in Geneva
Yemeni Human Rights Minister Mishdal Mohammed Omar held separate meetings in Geneva with representatives from the Netherlands and the United States to discuss the human rights situation in Yemen and strengthen institutional cooperation.
In discussions with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Netherlands, Ambassador Lars Tummers, the Minister addressed the need for technical support and capacity building under the Human Rights Council's tenth item. Omar highlighted ongoing violations by Houthi militias, including drone attacks on residential areas, child recruitment, civilian displacement, and threats to international maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab. The Minister also noted the kidnapping of UN and humanitarian workers and the obstruction of aid delivery.
During a meeting with James Myers, the human rights official for the U.S. Permanent Mission to the UN, the Minister emphasized the importance of international support for monitoring, documentation, and accountability efforts. Discussions focused on supporting the Yemeni government's transitional justice processes and protecting victims and witnesses. Both Dutch and American officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Yemeni government, humanitarian interventions, and the rule of law.
