Yemen launches 2027–2029 economic development and reconstruction plan

Mohammed al-Faqmi, the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, has launched the initial phase of preparing a socio-economic development and reconstruction plan for the period 2027–2029. During a meeting of the specialized technical committee in Aden, the minister outlined a framework aimed at establishing a clear path for sustainable recovery.

The initiative comes in response to a national economy that has seen a contraction of more than 50 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in recent years, alongside declining basic services and increased food insecurity. The plan prioritizes rebuilding institutions, enhancing governance, and maintaining macroeconomic stability. It also seeks to transition from humanitarian aid dependency toward sustainable development by rehabilitating essential sectors such as health, education, water, and electricity.

Key objectives include improving statistical capabilities, creating an environment conducive to local investment, and generating employment opportunities for women and youth. The 2027–2029 plan is part of a broader long-term developmental vision extending to 2040, which aims to build a resilient, diversified economy through participatory methodologies involving ministries, local authorities, the private sector, and civil society.
