Yemen legal minister and IOM discuss displacement and trafficking laws

Yemen’s Minister of Legal Affairs, Judge Ishraq al-Maqtari, met with the head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Yemen, Abdul Sattar Issaweif, in Aden to discuss legislative cooperation. The discussions focused on enhancing legal frameworks to protect displaced persons, regulating migration, and combating human trafficking.

Minister al-Maqtari highlighted ongoing government efforts to develop a national law to regulate displacement, utilizing international expertise and previous studies. She called for increased humanitarian intervention and attention to the growing needs of displaced populations in Aden, Taiz, Lahj, and Marib, specifically regarding shelter and basic services.

The meeting also addressed the need for effective legal frameworks to criminalize human trafficking, prevent its practice, and protect victims. Issaweif expressed the IOM’s readiness to provide technical support to the Ministry of Legal Affairs and relevant government bodies to develop these regulatory frameworks and continue humanitarian assistance in sectors such as health, water, and shelter.
