The Yemeni Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries participated via video link in the 37th session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Committee on Fisheries (COFI 37). The session is being held in Rome, Italy, from September 7 to 11.
Representing the ministry are Engineer Yaslam Bablaghoum, Undersecretary for the Fisheries Planning and Investment Sector, and Mohammed Maqbool, a researcher from the Marine Science Research Authority. The session involves representatives from FAO member states discussing critical issues including sustainable fisheries management, combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and adapting to climate change impacts.
Other key topics include supporting small-scale fisheries and enhancing the fisheries sector's contribution to food security and livelihoods. Yemen's participation aims to strengthen its international presence, exchange expertise to develop its domestic fisheries sector, and coordinate with FAO and other member states to protect marine resources and support the national economy.
