Yemen petitions UN after Houthi attack on Aden International Airport
The Yemeni government has submitted an official letter to the United Nations and the UN Security Council demanding condemnation and accountability following a Houthi attack on Aden International Airport. The attack, which occurred on the morning of Wednesday, October 7, involved two ballistic missiles and explosive drones. The strike took place as a civilian flight was approaching for landing, posing a direct threat to passengers and airport staff.
In the letter sent by Yemen’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, the government described the targeting of a civilian facility as a “dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law.” The government warned that the incident demonstrates a shift from potential threats to the direct targeting of civilian infrastructure, impacting both air and maritime security in the region.
Furthermore, the Yemeni government called on the Security Council to strictly enforce the existing arms embargo on the Houthi militia, specifically citing Resolution 2216 (2015). They urged the international community to prevent the flow of military technology, components, and expertise to the group to protect international civil aviation and regional stability.
