Yemen plans strategic development of Qarma and Broum ports

Yemeni government ministers met in Aden to discuss the strategic development of two major maritime projects: the Qarma Port in the Socotra Archipelago and the Broum Port in Hadramaut.

The Qarma Port project aims to enhance national sovereignty and economic connectivity for the Socotra Archipelago. It is intended to transform the region from an aid-dependent area into a hub for exporting rare plants and fish, while also supporting global tourism by accommodating yachts and passenger ships.

The Broum Port is designed as a specialized facility for fishing and fish processing in Hadramaut. Given that Hadramaut produces over 60% of Yemen’s fisheries, the port seeks to reduce transport costs, provide cooling and export infrastructure, and alleviate congestion at the commercial port in Mukalla.

The Minister of Planning indicated that these projects will be presented to the World Bank and international donors in Bangkok to secure sustainable funding as part of Yemen’s economic recovery efforts.
