Yemen: Political analyst warns of Houthi power consolidation
Political analyst Samir Al-Yousifi has issued warnings regarding the continued control of the Houthi group in northern Yemen. He argues that relying solely on truces and negotiations without addressing the group's military capabilities risks legitimizing their authority and threatening regional security, specifically for Saudi Arabia and international maritime navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Al-Yousifi contends that treating the Houthis as a political faction that can be contained through dialogue is a misdiagnosis of the Yemeni crisis. He suggests that any settlement failing to account for the balance of power on the ground may grant the group political gains without resolving the underlying conflict. He also expressed concerns regarding the group's military resources, including missiles and drones, and questioned their independence from Iran.
In a related analysis, Al-Yousifi emphasized that restoring the Yemeni state and ending the Houthi coup is primarily the responsibility of Yemenis themselves. He noted that while regional and international support is significant, it cannot replace national will and comprehensive field efforts. He warned that the stability of Yemenis living abroad might inadvertently lead to a decreased focus on the national cause, potentially prolonging the current situation.
