UN Security Council condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia
The UN Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of ongoing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, specifically targeting civilian areas and energy infrastructure. The Council expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia, affirming its inherent right to self-defense under international law.
In addition to the attacks on Saudi territory, the Council raised alarms regarding Houthi threats to commercial maritime navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Members emphasized the necessity of adhering to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to ensure the safety of international shipping and crews.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen is also critical. UN reports indicate that at least 125,000 people have been displaced across Yemen since the beginning of September due to escalating military actions. Furthermore, the Security Council demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees, including 73 UN personnel held by the Houthi group.
