Yemen weather authorities warn of heavy thunderstorms and flash floods

Meteorological authorities in Yemen have issued warnings for heavy thunderstorms and potential flash floods across several provinces between August 15 and August 18, 2026. The weather patterns are expected to impact mountainous regions, including Saada, Taiz, Lahj, Ibb, Al Dhale', Al Bayda, Dhamar, Raymah, Sana'a, Al Mahwit, Amran, and Hajjah.

In coastal areas, including the Tihama plain and the western coast, varying intensities of thunderstorms are anticipated. High winds, ranging from 20 to 40 knots, are expected near the Socotra Archipelago, the eastern and southern coasts, and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, which may cause sea disturbances.

Authorities have advised citizens to avoid valleys, flood paths, and high ground to prevent accidents from sudden water flows, hail, and lightning strikes. Residents in mountainous areas are also warned of potential rockfalls, mudslides, and reduced visibility due to fog. In desert and coastal regions, extreme heat remains a concern, with officials recommending increased fluid intake and avoiding direct sunlight during midday.
