Yemeni journalist warns of political begging on social media

Yemeni journalist and writer Hamdan al-Aliyi has issued a warning regarding the rise of what he describes as ‘political begging’ on social media platforms. In an article titled ‘The New Beggars,’ al-Aliyi accuses certain Arab activists of exploiting the humanitarian crisis and suffering in Yemen to achieve financial gains.

According to al-Aliyi, these individuals seek to increase views and engagement or obtain funds and donations from Yemeni and regional parties. He argues that this digital form of exploitation differs from traditional begging; while traditional beggars rely on personal hardship, these activists leverage the suffering of others to attract followers and financiers through rhetoric centered on national crises.

Al-Aliyi noted that some activists address Yemeni affairs with ignorance or intentional misinformation rather than seeking truth or justice for victims. He clarified that his accusations are not directed at everyone discussing Yemen, distinguishing between those working for the Iranian axis and those spreading falsehoods for personal profit.
