Yemeni Journalists Syndicate condemns seizure attempts of writers' union in Sanaa

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate has issued a statement condemning attempts to seize the headquarters of the Union of Yemeni Writers and Literati in Sanaa. The syndicate expressed grave concern over reports that the security guard of the General Secretariat was ordered to vacate the premises, signaling potential efforts to confiscate the union’s headquarters and assets.

The syndicate expressed full solidarity with the union’s leadership and members, warning that any interference with the institution, its library, or its archives would constitute an attack on Yemen’s national and cultural memory. They noted that the union, established in 1970, has historically served as a unifying cultural force that transcends political and geographic divisions.

Furthermore, the syndicate warned that targeting such institutions undermines the remaining civil society space in the country and threatens the independence of professional unions. They called on the de facto authorities in Sanaa to halt all measures targeting the union, respect its legal personality, and ensure the protection of its property and historical archives.
