Yemeni Parliament Speaker condemns UN Security Council statement

Yahya Ali Al-Ra’i, Speaker of the Yemeni House of Representatives in Sana’a, has issued a formal condemnation of a recent UN Security Council statement regarding the situation in Yemen. In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Security Council President Jérôme Bonnafont, Al-Ra’i accused the Council of bias toward the Saudi-led coalition and distorting international standards.

The Speaker asserted that the statement ignores Yemen’s right to self-defense against ongoing airstrikes. He reported that targeting civilian infrastructure and economic facilities since March 2015 has caused over 60,000 civilian casualties, primarily among women, children, and the elderly.

Al-Ra’i held the Saudi regime responsible for failing to meet de-escalation commitments and implementing the agreed-upon roadmap. The letter cited recent strikes on Sanaa International Airport, the Central Prison in Jawf Governorate, and various public service facilities such as roads and bridges. The Yemeni Parliament called on international bodies to uphold the nation’s sovereignty and warned of the consequences of further military escalation and blockades.
