Yeni Cami reconstruction nears completion in Malatya
Reconstruction of the historic Yeni Cami (also known as Hacı Yusuf Taş Cami) in Malatya is nearing completion following its destruction in the February 6, 2023, earthquakes. The project, overseen by the General Directorate of Foundations, has reached a milestone as the mosque's lights were turned on for the first time in years, making its silhouette visible in the city's night skyline.
The reconstruction process began in July 2023 after the site was handed over for work. Under the guidance of a scientific committee and academic experts, remaining structural elements from the earthquake were carefully dismantled. Following ground reinforcement, the building has been reconstructed to remain faithful to its original architectural texture and historical identity.
As the works enter their final stages, officials expect the mosque to reopen for worship in the near future. The restoration is viewed as a significant step in the social and spatial recovery of Malatya and the preservation of the city's collective memory.
