Halk TV faces trustee appointment and social media restrictions in Turkey

Following an investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into channel owner Cafer Mahiroğlu regarding allegations of bribery and tender fraud, a trustee has been appointed to Halk TV. The intervention led to the suspension of the channel's broadcasts and the blocking of its social media presence. Specifically, the platform X has made the channel's account with approximately 3 million followers invisible to users in Turkey.

In response, press professional organizations, including the Turkish Journalists' Union (TGS) and the Press Council, have called for nationwide protests on October 24 to denounce the appointment and rising pressures on media freedom. Additionally, the YENİ Party organized a solidarity rally in front of the Halk TV studios in Istanbul on October 21. During the rally, YENİ Party leader Özgür Özel characterized the move as a political blow intended to silence opposition voices and prevent the coverage of critical news matters.
