Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş arrest sparks political dispute

Political tensions have escalated in Turkey following the arrest of Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş. YENİ Parti leader Özgür Özel held a rally in Üsküdar, condemning the arrest as unjust and illegal, and accusing the government of attempting to override the will of the voters. In a letter sent from prison, Dedetaş asserted that sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül responded to the criticisms, stating that his role is to act within legal boundaries and remain neutral in political disputes. Gül clarified that a court decision had invalidated the initial deputy mayor election, necessitating a new selection process according to the Municipal Law. He emphasized that the subsequent election was conducted within the legal timeframe following the court's refusal to stay the decision.

AK Parti spokesperson Ömer Çelik strongly criticized Özel's rhetoric, describing his tone as unsuitable and accusing him of targeting state officials and administrative authorities. Çelik argued that Özel was using judicial processes and state institutions as targets for political accountability to mask his own party's failures.
