Turkey minimum wage debates intensify over regional model claims

Political and labor leaders in Turkey are raising concerns regarding the minimum wage and economic stability. Gökhan Günaydın, Group Deputy Chairman of the YENİ Party, claimed that the government is preparing to implement a regional minimum wage model. He argued this would allow for lower wages in provinces with a lower cost of living compared to expensive cities like Istanbul.

Günaydın highlighted that high inflation has eroded the purchasing power of the current 28,000 lira minimum wage, noting that the effective value has dropped to approximately 23,000 lira. He also pointed out that the hunger threshold has reached 37,000 lira, leaving millions living below the poverty line.

In a separate development regarding wage negotiations, HAK-İŞ President Mahmut Arslan proposed an ‘Almanya model’ (German model) for the Minimum Wage Determination Commission. Arslan suggested a system where labor and employer representatives negotiate directly under a referee, rather than the government acting as a party to the negotiations. He warned that without more democratic and fair representation, labor unions like TÜRK-İŞ might continue to boycott the commission meetings.
