Seoul Gangnam arson suspect arrested after two building fires

A man in his 70s has been arrested for setting fire to two buildings in the Yeoksam-dong area of Gangnam, Seoul, on October 20. The fires occurred approximately seven minutes apart at the Shinmyeong Building and the Hanyang Building, both of which house patent law firms.

The arson resulted in 19 injuries, including one patent attorney who was found in cardiac arrest and required resuscitation. Other victims suffered from smoke inhalation and severe burns. Approximately 60 people evacuated the buildings during the incident.

The suspect, who was apprehended near Dongmyo Station, admitted to the crimes, claiming he wanted to expose fraud committed by the patent law firms regarding his intellectual property. Investigations revealed the suspect had previously been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a similar incident in 2022, where he threatened employees at the same locations with gasoline.

Police are preparing to request an arrest warrant on charges of arson resulting in injury.
