Yeom Hong-cheol appointed chairperson for 2027 Chungcheong Universiade
Yeom Hong-cheol, the former mayor of Daejeon, has officially assumed his role as the chairperson of the organizing committee for the 2027 Chungcheong FISU World University Games. His appointment follows a leadership vacancy created by the resignations of the previous chairperson and vice-chairperson in July.
The 2027 games will be the first large-scale sporting event jointly hosted by the four Chungcheong region provinces and cities: Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong, and North Chungcheong. The event is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 12, 2027, and is expected to host approximately 15,000 athletes from 150 countries competing in 18 sports.
In his inaugural address, Yeom emphasized the need for unity and solidarity among the 5.6 million residents of the Chungcheong region to overcome administrative and environmental differences. The organizing committee plans to use this leadership transition to accelerate preparations, specifically reviewing operational plans for venues, athlete villages, transportation, accommodation, and safety protocols while strengthening cooperation with the government and the International University Sports Federation (FISU).
