Yeon Sang-ho releases new zombie thriller Colony
South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho, known for ‘Train to Busan’, has released a new zombie horror film titled ‘Colony’. The film is set in a Seoul skyscraper that serves as both a shopping center and a venue for a biotech conference.
The plot follows a scientist, Seo Young-chul (played by Koo Kyo-hwan), who unleashes a bioengineered mold to seek retribution against a CEO. The pathogen transforms victims into agile, aggressive zombies that possess a collective intelligence or hive mind, allowing them to learn and evolve through shared brainwaves and pheromones.
Survivors, including characters played by Jun Ji-hyun and Go Soo, must navigate the quarantined building as the infected demonstrate advanced, coordinated behaviors. While some critics praise the film's cerebral approach to the genre and its innovative use of hive-mind mechanics, others suggest it relies on familiar genre tropes.
