Yeongdeok wind power plant fire investigation begins

Authorities have launched a joint forensic investigation at the Yeongdeok Wind Power Plant in Gyeongbuk Province, six months after a fire claimed the lives of three workers. Approximately 40 officials from various agencies, including the National Forensic Service, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, participated in the inspection on December 12.

The investigation focuses on the charred generator components and tower structures to determine the exact cause of the blaze. The fire occurred on March 23 at unit 19 of the wind farm while workers were performing repairs. Two workers were found inside a fallen blade, while the third fell from the turbine.

The forensic process was delayed due to safety concerns, including the need to secure access roads for heavy machinery to reach the 80-meter-high site and managing high winds. Police stated they intend to investigate potential violations of safety measures and hold responsible parties accountable based on the findings.
