Yeongyang County selected as candidate for Ramsar Wetland City
Yeongyang County in Gyeongsangbuk-do has been selected as a domestic candidate for the 4th Ramsar Wetland City certification following an evaluation by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. The selection is centered on the Janggumegi Wetland, a mountain wetland formed naturally from abandoned paddy fields.
The Janggumegi Wetland serves as a vital ecosystem, hosting 458 species, including six endangered species such as the yellow-throated marten, leopard cat, and oriental dollarbird. The county was highly rated for its ecological city model, which integrates the wetland with local cultural resources like Seoseokji and Samji.
Yeongyang County aims to achieve official certification at the 2028 Ramsar Convention Conference of the Parties. Successful certification would allow the region to use the Ramsar brand and logo to enhance the value of its local agricultural products and ecotourism resources through strengthened public-private-academic cooperation.
