Yeonsu-gu Council faces criticism over partisan conflict

The Yeonsu-gu Council in Incheon is facing criticism for intense partisan conflict and a breakdown in cooperation. During a recent plenary session, heated verbal exchanges occurred between council members and government officials, leading to shouting matches and the removal of individuals from the chamber.

Democratic Party member Park Hee-du was involved in a confrontation with a planning and budget official after questioning why the official sighed during a speech. Additionally, controversy has arisen regarding the appropriateness of certain five-minute free speeches and whether members are using them to bypass formal procedures for political criticism.

The council's current composition—consisting of 7 People Power Party members, 6 Democratic Party members, and 1 independent—has led to frequent friction over local issues such as the relocation of the Overseas Koreans Agency and the development of Cheonghak Station. Critics and local employees note that this political infighting is hindering essential policy discussions and administrative oversight.
