Yeosu Law of the Sea Academy hosts maritime experts from 22 nations

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Maritime Institute are hosting the 13th Yeosu Law of the Sea Academy in Yeosu, South Korea. Running from October 12 to 23, the international training program aims to strengthen the maritime capabilities of developing nations.

This year, 31 officials and researchers from 22 countries, including Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines, are participating. Since its inception in 2014, the academy has trained 474 participants from 85 different countries.

The curriculum covers fundamental principles of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), maritime boundary delimitation, overlapping jurisdictions, autonomous vessels, and submarine cables. The faculty includes high-level experts such as Tomas Heidar, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), and members of the UN International Law Commission.

Officials noted that the academy serves as a platform for discussing global maritime issues and fosters maritime diplomacy by building networks with international experts and government officials.
