Yeosu World Island Expo faces scrutiny over budget and attendance
The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo is facing intense scrutiny through a National Assembly audit and a public audit requested by the Board of Audit and Inspection. While cumulative attendance surpassed 1.3 million people following a slow start, the figure remains significantly below the initial target of 3 million.
Key points of contention include the project's budget, which rose from an approved 24.8 billion won in 2021 to a current direct cost of 72.3 billion won, with total related expenditures reaching approximately 180 billion won. Critics are also questioning the decision to build the main venue in the Jinmo district rather than utilizing existing infrastructure.
Financial concerns persist as over 80% of visitors have entered through free admission programs. This high ratio of free entries, combined with low paid ticket sales, threatens the goal of covering 12 billion won of the budget through self-generated revenue. Additionally, some observers have criticized the event for relying on celebrity performances and general festivals rather than focusing on the core value and charm of islands.
