Yeosu World Island Expo hits 1.25 million visitors amid payment dispute
The 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo has reached a milestone of 1.25 million cumulative visitors within its first 40 days. The event aims to address global island crises, including climate change, rising sea levels, and population decline. International participants, including local governments from 30 countries and organizations such as the WHO and UNICEF, are showcasing sustainable solutions like coral reef restoration and plastic-free models.
However, the expo is facing financial controversy. Approximately 30 facility contractors are claiming they have not been paid 3.5 billion won for equipment such as containers, mobile toilets, and cooling devices. The contractors allege that while the scope of work and material quality increased, the budget was not adjusted accordingly. They claim the organizing committee and the general execution agency are shifting responsibility for the unpaid amounts. The organizing committee has held a tripartite meeting to discuss settlement procedures and mediation.
